Who Should Attend the Paediatric First Aid e-Learning Course?

This course is designed for someone who is not looking for a formal first aid qualification and instead wants basic knowledge in paediatric first aid.

Learning Outcomes

This course can be used for those who do not wish to receive a formal qualification, as pre-learning for those attending a face-to-face course or as an annual refresher to prevent skills and knowledge fading.

Learning and Assessment

Over this course learners will complete 2 units.

Unit 1: Paediatric Emergency First Aid

Learners will be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take to:

  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is having a seizure
  • Help a baby or child who is choking
  • Help a baby or child who is bleeding
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolemic shock).

Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

Learners will acquire knowledge on how to:

  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
  • Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
  • Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
  • Help a baby or child with head, neck or back injuries
  • Help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned
  • Help a baby or child with a foreign body in eyes, ears or nose
  • Help a baby or child with an eye injury
  • Help a baby or child with a bite or sting
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold
  • Help a baby or child having a diabetic emergency, an asthma attack, meningitis, febrile convulsions or an allergic reaction *(including safe use of Adrenaline Auto-Injectors)
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and the need for recording accidents and incidents).

* Basic training in the safe use of Adrenaline Auto-Injectors included as standard as of 1st June 2019.

How long is a Paediatric First Aid e-learning course?

This online course takes on average around 4 hours to complete.

Will taking this e-learning course make me a qualified paediatric first aider?

No. If you’re looking to become a qualified paediatric first aider you will need to complete either the Blended Paediatric First Aid Training course (50% online and 50% face-to-face) or a 2-day practical face-to-face course to meet current legislative requirements.
