“Going in very blind to the role of Educational Visits Co-ordinator (EVC). This course really helped me to gain an understanding of what I’m meant to be doing.”
We offer general membership subscriptions to CLEAPSS for both primary and secondary phases and a Radiation Protection Advisory (RPA) Service for schools that hold sources that fall under the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR) 2017 to support compliance with health and safety legislation.
CLEAPSS (Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services) is an independent and impartial advisory service providing guidance, support and training in science, D&T and art and design.
Importantly, membership enables an employer to discharge its duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and its subsequent Regulations, in respect of these subject areas.
It is a requirement that all schools have access to competent health and safety advice for the management of practical learning in schools and CLEAPSS advice and documentation is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive and the Department for Education as the definitive basis for safe practice in primary schools, secondary schools and colleges.
Low-level radioactive sources are used in many secondary school and college science departments to teach parts of the National Curriculum and A-Level physics.
Although the sources are low level, they come within the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR) 2017.
To comply, the school employer will need to appoint a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) in each setting and a suitably qualified individual (Radiation Protection Advisor) or organisation (Radiation Protection Body) as their source of radiation advice.
The HSE has confirmed that the type of work carried out with radioactive substances in school science means that the school employer must, in nearly all cases, appoint (in writing) an RPA.

“It is very reassuring to know that I can call upon the expert help and advice of the Health and Safety Support Team at any time.”
“I’ve done a few first aid courses in the past and this is the best, most engaging course I have done. The trainers were very good at keeping us engaged and there was a good balance between listening and practical activities.”
